First: RAM usually isn't your bottleneck
Before we talk numbers, an important reality check: for most FiveM performance problems, CPU (specifically single-thread performance) is the limiting factor, not RAM. That said, you do need *enough* RAM, and running out causes real problems.
What uses RAM on a FiveM server
- The server process itself
- Your framework and resources (more scripts = more memory)
- Streamed assets โ vehicles, MLOs, textures held in memory
- Player data and connections scaling with population
- Your database if hosted on the same machine
Content-heavy servers with lots of streamed assets use notably more than lean ones.
Realistic RAM guidance by server type
Rather than promise exact figures (which vary with your content and setup), here's the practical framing:
- Small / test servers (a few players, minimal content): modest RAM is fine.
- Medium community servers (32โ64 players, a normal resource list): you'll want comfortable headroom โ enough that you're never near the limit under load.
- Large / content-heavy servers (64+, lots of streamed assets, big resource lists): significantly more, because streamed content and many resources add up.
The principle: have enough that you're not running near your limit during peak load, with room to spare. Running out of RAM causes crashes and severe lag.
How to know if you have enough
Monitor your server's memory usage under real load โ during your busiest times, not when empty. If you're comfortably below your limit with headroom, you're fine. If you're regularly near the ceiling, you need more.
Watch especially as you add streamed content โ vehicles and MLOs consume memory, and piling them on is a common way to blow past your RAM budget (and cause texture loss).
Don't over-buy RAM to fix CPU problems
The key mistake: throwing RAM at a lag problem that's actually CPU-bound. If your server lags with plenty of free RAM, more RAM won't help โ look at your CPU and your scripts instead. Buy enough RAM for headroom, then focus your budget on single-thread CPU performance.
