Every experienced server owner made mistakes when they started โ it's part of learning. But you can skip a lot of pain by learning from the common ones. Here are 10 mistakes new FiveM server owners make, and how to avoid each.
1. Installing too many scripts at once
The classic mistake. New owners dump twenty scripts in at once, the server breaks, and they have no idea which one caused it.
Avoid it: Add scripts one at a time, testing each before the next. When something breaks, you'll know exactly what did it.
2. Ignoring performance until it's a crisis
Lag creeps up as you add resources, and by the time players complain, you've got a tangled mess to untangle.
Avoid it: Check resmon regularly from the start. Test each script's cost. Treat performance as ongoing, not an emergency.
3. Using leaked or "free" paid scripts
Tempting, but leaked scripts are frequently backdoored, unsupported, and break constantly. A "free" script that compromises your server is the most expensive mistake you'll make.
Avoid it: Buy from legitimate creators. Use free *legitimate* scripts freely; never touch leaks.
4. Skipping the database step
Half of "my script doesn't work" problems are a skipped SQL import โ the script loads but has no database tables.
Avoid it: Always run a script's included SQL, and verify your oxmysql connection.
5. Over-provisioning hosting for players you don't have
Paying for a massive server when you'll have 5 players wastes money; the reverse (underpowering) causes lag.
Avoid it: Right-size your hosting to realistic numbers, prioritizing single-thread CPU. Scale as you grow.
6. Ignoring server-side security
Running insecure scripts that trust the client means cheaters walk right in.
Avoid it: Understand client vs server and choose scripts with server-side validation.
7. Not backing up
One bad update or corruption and โ with no backup โ the server and all player progress is gone.
Avoid it: Back up your files and database regularly, especially before updates.
8. Neglecting the economy
An unbalanced economy โ runaway inflation or grinding poverty โ quietly drives players away.
Avoid it: Balance job income against money sinks from the start, and tune as you observe your playerbase.
9. Updating everything on a whim (with no backup)
Updating artifacts or core resources carelessly can break the whole server.
Avoid it: Back up first, use recommended artifacts, update one thing at a time, and test.
10. Trying to launch "perfect"
New owners often delay launching forever, chasing a perfect server that never comes.
Avoid it: Get a solid, stable core working, launch, and iterate based on real player feedback. A server is never "done" โ the best ones improve continuously.
The throughline
Notice the pattern: most mistakes come from moving too fast, cutting corners on quality/security, and not testing. Slow down, test as you go, use legitimate quality resources, and back up. That discipline separates servers that last from servers that flame out.
