How Cfx.re Escrow Works โ€” and Why It Protects You When Buying FiveM Scripts

If you've bought FiveM scripts, you've probably seen the word "escrow" attached to them. It's one of those terms that gets thrown around without much explanation. Here's what Cfx.re asset escrow actually is, why it exists, and what it means for you as a buyer.

What escrow is

Cfx.re asset escrow is a protection system built into the FiveM platform by Cfx.re (the team behind FiveM). It lets script creators sell their work while keeping the core code protected from theft. When a script is "escrow-protected," its main logic is encrypted and tied to the buyer's Cfx.re account โ€” so it runs on your server, but the source code can't simply be copied and redistributed.

Why it exists

Before escrow, FiveM script piracy was rampant. A creator would sell a script, and within days a "leaked" copy would be circulating for free, killing their ability to make a living and fund updates. Escrow changed that by making it genuinely difficult to steal the protected portions of a resource.

This benefits everyone:

  • Creators can invest time building quality scripts knowing their work is protected.
  • Buyers get access to better, actively-maintained resources, because creators can actually sustain their work.
  • Servers stay safer, because there's less incentive to run sketchy leaked copies riddled with backdoors.

What you can still edit

A common worry is that escrow means you can't customize anything. That's not how good creators use it. On a well-built escrowed script, the config file and locale files are left open and editable โ€” only the core logic is protected.

That means you can typically still:

  • Change settings, prices, locations, and options in the config
  • Retheme the UI (colors, text)
  • Translate the interface into other languages
  • Adjust keybinds and behavior

What you *can't* do is read or copy the underlying implementation โ€” which is exactly the point. You get full control over how the script behaves on your server without being able to steal and resell it.

How delivery works

When you buy an escrowed script, it's delivered to the Cfx.re Portal linked to the FiveM account you used at checkout. You download it from there and drop it into your server's resources. Updates arrive through the same portal. This is why, when buying, you'll often be asked to sign in with your FiveM account โ€” it ties the asset to you.

The buyer's takeaway

Escrow is a good thing. It means the script you're buying is more likely to be actively maintained, and it keeps the ecosystem healthier by discouraging piracy. When you see "escrow-protected" on a resource, read it as a sign the creator is invested in their work โ€” while still checking that the config is left open so you can actually customize it.

At Viper Development, all our scripts use Cfx.re asset escrow with the config and locale files fully open. You get secure delivery straight to your Cfx portal, plus the freedom to tune everything to your server.
