Using Images, MLOs & Assets Legally on Your FiveM Server

FiveM servers are built from assets โ€” car models, MLOs (map interiors), clothing, images, and scripts. But "I found it online" doesn't mean "I can use it." Using assets legally protects your server from takedowns, disputes, and TOS trouble. Here's what you need to know. (General guidance, not legal advice.)

The core principle: downloadable โ‰  free to use

The biggest misconception in FiveM is that if you can download something, you can use it however you like. Not true. Almost every asset has a creator, and that creator sets terms โ€” some are free for any use, some are free for non-commercial use only, some require payment, and some forbid redistribution entirely.

Using an asset outside its license can lead to DMCA complaints, Cfx.re action against your server, or removal from asset platforms.

Car models and vehicles

Custom vehicles are hugely popular and a common source of trouble:

  • Many are free for personal/server use but not for resale or paywalling.
  • Some are paid and must be purchased for commercial server use.
  • Real-world branded vehicles (actual manufacturer models/logos) carry additional IP considerations.

Check each vehicle's license. Don't put paid or non-commercial vehicles behind your server's donation perks unless the license allows it.

MLOs (map interiors)

MLOs โ€” custom building interiors โ€” are significant work and often paid products. Using a leaked or unpaid MLO is both a TOS and IP problem. If an MLO is sold, buy it. If it's free, confirm the license covers server use.

Images and UI art

Loading screens, logos, and UI art are easy to grab from the web, but stock images, other creators' art, and branded graphics all have rights. Using copyrighted images can draw complaints. Safer paths: create your own, commission art, or use properly licensed/royalty-free sources with terms that permit your use.

Clothing and EUP

Custom clothing and EUP (uniforms, especially for police/EMS roleplay) follow the same rule โ€” check the license. Some packs are free, some paid, and some restrict redistribution.

Scripts

Scripts are assets too. Running leaked or nulled paid scripts is both an IP violation and a security risk (they're often backdoored). Only run scripts you've legitimately obtained.

How to stay safe

  • Read the license for every asset before using it. Look for "commercial use," "server use," and "redistribution" terms.
  • Keep proof of purchase and licenses for paid assets.
  • When unsure, ask the creator โ€” most will tell you what's allowed.
  • Never use leaked content, whether scripts, MLOs, vehicles, or art.
  • Prefer escrow-protected, properly-sold resources โ€” the transaction is clean and the rights are clear.

Why it's worth the effort

Servers built on stolen assets live under constant risk โ€” a single complaint can trigger takedowns that wipe out features or the whole server. Servers built on properly licensed content run for years without that hanging over them. It's the difference between building on solid ground and building on sand.

At Viper Development, everything we sell is original work, properly licensed, and escrow-protected โ€” so when you buy from us, your rights to use it on your server are clear. Browse our scripts โ†’
